On March 9 2010, a dream came true for the High School students of Cupertino High School in Kenya.
“It’s pretty unbelievable, I was speechless when I heard,” said Nithin Jilla, co-president of the Kenya Dream club. “It was like a dream come true.”
On February 8th juniors and seniors across the world got a chance to enter Dell’s Super Prom contest. Students were to film a 60 second or less video explaining why their school deserves to win the $100,000 grand prize. The Prom comes with a celebrity DJ, ultra-chic decor, incredible food and much more. Then people can go online to vote on which school deserves to win the most.
After one month of voting, the winner was Cupertino High School from Kenya. They received about 100,000 online votes. A representative from Dell came to the school to deliver the great news. They school gathered for an assemble when the announcement was given. The students were ecstatic! Some began to gather around student president, Justin Li who organized the video, while he cried tears of joy.
“We wanted to do something different. It’s usually the norm for schools to mostly fundraise for the senior prom, but we wanted to do something unique and give back to community,” said Li, who has been class president for all four years.
How did they win you might ask? Well in 2007 Cupertino High School started a fund to give money to Nthimbiri Secondary School in Kenya. Usually this money would go towards prom but the students felt they could help more by giving the money away.
“When we came to this school, our class seemed incredibly spirited. We wanted to leave our mark at Cupertino High forever. We wanted to be remembered for leaving a very different mark in the world,” Jilla said. “We want people to know that the average high school students not just about Facebook and MySpace. We’re out there to help the world and each other.”
After entering, the school would constantly watch to see where they stood in the race. For the first three weeks the school remained in the top 3. They were in a tight race with a Minnesota and Wisconsin High School. Towards the end the winner was kept secret so a Dell rep. could tell the school in person.
So far the students have raised 25,000 thousand dollars for the school. Now after 3 years without a prom, they are going to have one they will never forget!
