The Varsity Boys hockey team started out their season with an out of city Tournament. They were in Duluth for the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving, and won one of the two games they played. Though disheartening to lose their first game of the season, the team stayed positive and won their next game at the tournament, 5-4, in overtime.
On Dec. 1st, the team won their first game in the cities against the North Metro Stars, 4-1, despite the Stars taking about twice as many shots on goal than the Cougars took. Also throughout the game, the penalties for both teams added up. At one point, the Stars had three people in the box at the same time, but we were equally disadvantaged as the game went on. Stefan Brancel, a senior defenseman this year, was one of the main candidates for spending time in the penalty box.
“I spent about a fourth of the game in [the box]” Stefan said. He was given a minor penalty as well as being called for misconduct. He was penalized with 2 minutes for the minor, ten more minutes for the misconduct. “They called me for checking from behind,” but Stefan says the call was arguable, and because of that, it was one of the hardest hockey experiences he’s ever had. It’s harder to watch without being able to help out at all. Luckily, the team wasn’t shorthanded for the ten-minute misconduct period of his penalty, and the team still managed to score four points in total. When Stefan got out of the box, he was as happy as he’d ever been. “I played most of the third period,” he said, “I think I played a six minute long shift!”

An update on the standings, the Boy’s hockey team lost a game to North Saint Paul on Saturday, December 5th, but won by the smallest margin of 3-2 against Park Rapids on Friday the 11th. The team’s nest game in on Tuesday the 22nd, versus South Saint Paul.
