A little background information, sharing a history of a fight for independence and defeating over European powers, the United States and Haiti have a strong alliance. But that’s where the similarities end. Between 1888 and 1915, no Haitian president completed his term. Ten were killed or overthrown. Only one died of natural causes. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson took control of the Haitian National Bank. The assassination of the Haitian president a year later finally prompted President Wilson to invade Haiti with the aim of protecting U.S. assets and preventing the further strengthening of German influence in the region. After failing to make the new Haitian legislature adopt a constitution which would allow foreign land ownership, the Wilson administration forced the legislature to dissolve in 1917. Haiti’s frequent government change and long history of political instability and corruption has added to the turmoil.
Haiti has most recently been in the news because of the 7.1 earthquake that hit. A literally earth shattering event, on January 12, 2010 a massive earthquake hit Haiti. The worst earthquake within the region in more than 200 years! A third of Haiti’s people had been disrupted by the earthquake, in fear that as many as 50,000 died. Being the poorest country in the western hemisphere, having constant political upheaval and hurricanes, a monstrous earthquake was the last thing Haiti needed.
The U.S. and Haiti’s sibling relationship has been somewhat renewed. People all over the U.S. are working to help Haiti. Different relief programs are going on that everyone should look into. Everyone from celebrities to our very own school Como Park, with the upcoming dance, all profits from concessions are going to Haiti’s relief.
