I hope you ate your breakfast this morning! Out of all three meals in the day, breakfast is the most important. It refuels your glucose and sets up your body to run efficiently for the day.

As students it is vital to have energy throughout the day. Skipping breakfast will cause you to be more tired and less attentive during class. Skipping breakfast could really lower your grades.

So, need an easy way to raise your grade a little bit more to get over that B+ for your straight A report card? EAT BREAKFAST!

Breakfast is like refueling your car. If you skip it, you will have no energy source to propel you forward. You will have no power and your engine, aka your brain, will not be able to run at its full potential.

Some people say they can’t afford to eat breakfast, whether it’s due to lack of time or lack of income. Either way Como has provided us with a way that every student has an opportunity to get their breakfast before first hour. Breakfast in the lunchroom here at Como is FREE! Let me repeat that. FREE!!!

There is no excuse to skip breakfast. There is plenty of time to stop by the lunchroom before first hour and pick up some food to refuel your body for the day ahead.

Some people skip breakfast thinking that if they skip one of their three meals a day, they will lose weight, and skipping breakfast is the easy to do. Fact: Skipping breakfast will actually keep you from losing weight. Breakfast sets your metabolism for the day. Skipping it slows your metabolic rate and lowers your blood sugar. This causes you to become hungry and to feel tired. The result; you begin to snack more throughout the day. What do you usually snack on? Chips, candy, and other treats high in fat. The next result, you gain weight.

Try to include as many food groups in your morning meal as you can. The more the merrier. And no, doughnuts, candy, and other sugary snacks. They do not count as a healthy breakfast. Shoot for maximum nutrients and whole grains. Rather than a bowl of Frootloops, eat a bowl of granola and yogurt with fruit.

Let’s weigh the benefits of skipping breakfast to the costs. What do you gain by skipping breakfast? Maybe ten minutes of sleep, maybe. And with school breakfast that’s not even an issue. Other than that you don’t really gain anything at all.

Now, what are the costs of skipping breakfast? You gain weight, you’re tired throughout the day, you can’t concentrate, your grades in school suffer, you’re hungry, which to us teenagers is an agonizing feeling, and you don’t get to eat the most delicious meal of the day!

Bottom line: there really NO reason to skip breakfast. There are countless benefits to eating breakfast and no real reasons to skip it.
