Tuesday, February 12, Gov. Tim Pawlenty proposed a new budget for Minnesota but there are still a lot of issues that have yet to be resolved, including a $1.2 billion state budget deficit. He plans on making deep cuts in healthcare and welfare programs to balance the budget, as well as huge reductions in individual city and county funds.
Governor Pawlenty does not want to make any new taxes to balance the budget. And instead will cut large sums from state programs. Pawlenty stated “Adding more to the tax burden is not the way forward”.
There is a proposed $825 million in budget cuts. Pawlenty also believes that the state will receive $387 million for Medicaid even though Congress has not passed this aid yet. The general breakdown of where the money is coming from is as follows:
- $250 million from local governments
- $347 million from health care and welfare programs
- $47 million from higher education, mostly to the University of Minnesota
$181 million from other programs and state agencies
The governor has made sure even though he has a problem with the current education system he will not cut any money from the K-12 budget. So Como Park and other schools may not feel these deep cuts in the classrooms, but the many families who depend on state funding for health care or welfare will be hit hard.
Students planning to attend the University of Minnesota next year or in the near future may notice rising tuition and fees. If the cuts to higher education increase it will come to be much less affordable and not be able to offer as many programs as they currently do.
