Mark McGwire recently confessed to the media about his use of steroids in Major League Baseball. He broke the single season record for most homeruns in 1998. He broke this record while using anabolic steroids. The numbers he put up will now have an asterisk (*) next to them, because of his use of performance enhancing drugs.
Steroids are used to help build muscle and promote the development of male sexual characteristics such as the growth of facial hair. Anabolic steroids have harmful effects unlike the other three types of steroids, cortisol, estrogen, and progesterone. Without a prescription, anabolic steroids are illegal.
The negative effects of anabolic steroids on guys can include, the shrinking of the testicles, reduced sperm count, infertility, baldness, development of breasts, increased risk for prostate cancer, and severe acne. For girls the growth of facial hair, male-pattern baldness, changes in or cessation of the menstrual cycle, enlargement of the clitoris, and a permanently deepened voice are possible side effects.
Don’t stoop to the level of wanting to be an over achiever, the use of performance enhancing drugs can cause horrible side effects that will affect you for the rest of your life. Rather, workout or eat healthy to achieve your goals.
