Monday, November 23, 2009- Wednesday at about 9:30 am unexpected announcement echoed through the halls. What seemed to be a routine lockdown was implemented for the time being. Because of the type of lockdown (lockdown with warning) classes were able to carry on as scheduled.
However this routine lockdown seemed a little different from past drills. Past lockdown with warning drills lasted, at the most, 15 minutes while this one lasted for almost an hour. On top of that warnings were reiterated over a period of 20 minutes. Students were told to stay in their classes even after the passing bell had rung. Finally at 10:18 am classes were told to carry on as scheduled, confused students were ushered to their classes, and the balance of the natural learning environment returned to normal.
What actually happened to cause this disturbance? Principal Mesick recounts the whole event of the lockdown in a phone call sent out to all students. Early on that Wednesday morning police apprehended an armed individual on the corner of Maryland and Grotto and as a result of the nearby threat police notified Mr. Mesick. Since the threat was in such close proximity there was no choice but to put the school on lockdown. There was no immediate threat as the intruder never set foot on school property, but was placed into effect for the protection of students and staff. Como Park Elementary was also on lockdown at this time.
