The Como Park Ultimate team surprised everyone with an outstanding performance at this years Hold Back the Snow tournament in Winnipeg, Canada! Previously known as a mediocre team in this tournament, usually taking between 10th to 15th place, Como was looking to crush their 10th seed expectations.

With winds nearing 20 mph and teeth chattering temperatures the tournament director described the effects of the weather as, “Hands and feet felt like blocks of ice, and catching the disc felt like catching a rock.”

Como started off Saturdays play in a close rundown against a fellow Minnesota team Minneapolis South. South had taken second in state last year, so it was to be no easy matchup. Minneapolis South prevailed with a tight 9-8 victory. This did not mean that Como had lost their shot at a championship; it nearly meant it would only be a bit more challenging.

Como went on to steamroll the rest of the teams in their pool with scores like 11-4, 9-5, and 11-7; knocking out 2006 champions Kelvin Clippers. “We were the only team to break seed on Saturday,” explains player Dan Heuer.

This matched up Como in Sunday bracket play with the hardest game they could possibly get. They were to play first seed, National Champions Hopkins who had not been beaten in two years. Everyone expected a blowout, but Como didn’t let that get into their heads. This was their game, their shot at a championship and they weren’t going to give it up without a fight.

Hopkins showed up at the fields early Sunday morning to warm up for bracket play. Hopkins thought it was over already. Last time Como saw this matchup, Hopkins dominated with 15-1 victory. But this was a new season.

Hopkins’s confidence grew as they pulled a quick 2-0 lead on Como; but with this, Como’s intensity soared. They came back with 3 big huck (like a hail marry in football) connections between players Dan Heuer, Jesus Caballero and Luther Buhr bringing the score to 3-2 Como.

Hopkins took half with confidence leading 7-4. Como fought back, once again making some furious connections to tie the game up at 9-9. “We were unstoppable in the air,” explains Luther Buhr. This was extremely frustrating for Hopkins because the big air game has always been their game; not anymore.

Time limits came into play so soft cap came on. That means you add two points to the highest score and play to that. So it was 9-9, battle to 11.

Hopkins scored, 10-9. Como answered, 10-10. It was game point, next point wins. Hopkins worked it up the field and scored the winning point, 11-10 final. Both teams’ players immediately began congratulating each other on a great game.

It was the closest Hopkins had come to losing in over a year. Como more than doubled the number points anyone had scored on them in this tournament. It was the game of the tournament.

This loss put Como in the fifth place bracket where they dominated teams like Cretin Derham Hall to take fifth at Hold Back the Snow 2009.
