Are you flying through school, having the time of your life at the expense of your schoolwork? Perhaps you are planning on making up the schoolwork soon, before the end of the quarter, and getting your grade up in time. If thats your plan, you might want to think about changing gear. The end of the first quarter is just around the corner, and the grades will be final on Thursday, November 12th. So for those of you with a pile of missing homework in your locker you will want to start getting it done ASAP, because you are cutting it closer than you may think.

This is not unlike the story of a young man who was enjoying himself too much to see the repercussions of getting lost in his fun. His name was Icarus. Icarus and his father Daedalus were imprisoned on an the island of Crete. Daedalus was a great inventor, so he created two pairs of wings fashioned from wax and feathers so that he and his son could fly to freedom. Daedalus warned Icarus not to fly too close to the sun, and then they set off. Icarus felt so free as he flew, he loved the air and reveled in his flight. Icarus flew higher and higher, forsaking his father’s warning, he was having the time of his life, and wanted to push himself to his limits. As he flew higher and closer to the sun, the sun’s heat started to melt the wax holding the wings together. When he realized what was happening, he attempted to fly down in time to save himself, but it was too late. The wings came apart and Icarus fell to his doom.

Hopefully you can see the connection between this Greek tale and today’s students. Though you may think it is worth the risk to have fun now and try to catch up later, know that the end of the quarter is closer than you think. And once you’ve started procrastinating, you are more likely to continue pushing it until the very end. Your safest bet is just to get your work done on time. But for those of you who have already been leaving your work to the last minute, you will want to start A.S.A.P. Because the end of the quarter, Thursday November 12th, is just a week away, and the last minute is now.
