This year Como has undergone one of the biggest staff changes in years and one new face to the table is counselor, Rick Walker. Taking over for original counselor, Bee Her, he has come to help every student out and asks for hard work in return.

An alumnus of the University of Wisconsin- Stout, he graduated with a degree in Psychology and attended graduate school to become the helping hand in our students’ futures and their pathway to the stars. In other words, he became a guidance counselor and Como Park has gained in having him here.

Although Mr. Walker has worked at other high schools and junior highs he still faces a few challenges, but feels Como is a “breathe of fresh air”. Getting to know all the students and understanding the new format is tough but it’s a rewarding experience to be able to work with so many students that want to succeed.

Outside of work, Mr. Walker enjoys time with his wife and kids but when he’s not working or with family, he loves pumpin’ some iron and watching his good ol’ home state football team, the Green Bay Packers. He also was a basketball player in high school and college, but for only a semester when he started to realize academics was his real goal.

“If you were stranded on an island and you could only bring three things, what would you bring?” Mr. Walker’s response that he would bring his wife and kids, his Ipod to have some tunes, and of course, Sports Center. When asked if he could do anything else right now, what would you be doing, immediately Mr. Walker said playing in the NFL. It’s obvious he’s got the size to be in there, but realistically he said that he would probably be a cop. He may not be writing people tickets and holding a badge but he still helps the world by giving a hand to students and their futures.
