Playing the number two team in state isn’t always the most fun way to end a season, but the Como Park Cougars held their ground the best they could against The Hill- Murray Pioneers with a 6-0 lost. The Cougars finished with their first double digit win column since 4 years ago with a record of 11-15-1.
Coming off of a 7-2 win last time the Cougars met up with Saint Bernard Saints, the Saints were the first team Como Park took on in the playoffs Wednesday, Febuary 24th. The Saints showed some speed and aggression on the ice from coming off of a two win streak. The Saints had many scoring chances but Como goal tender Tom Bakker played strong from start to finish and only allowed one past him that led to a 3-1 victory over the Saints.
Como Park advanced to the second round and had to take on the 2nd toughest team in the state with only two losses all year, the Hill-Murray Pioneers. The Cougars were aware even before the Saint game that they would have a very difficult game ahead of them against Hill-Murray. Senior goalie, Tom Bakker minded the net for potentially his last game of his high school career.
As the Pioneers won the first face off, they looked in confusion at Como’s side of the ice as the Cougars dropped 4 men back to the blue line and only one man in the neutral zone. Hill Murray set up and drove in and was denied by the defense of Como. It was obvious Como Park’s game plan was to hold the Pioneers to as few goals aspossible and wait for the chances.
At the end of the first, Como Park held a number two team to only 1 goal; however the Pioneers drove back scoring 4 more in the second. The cougars were still held at 0 goals and under 10 shots and it would stay that way as the clock ran out and gave Hill Murray a 6-0 win. Though they lost, a tap on the back was deserved for Como Park and goaltender Tom Bakker for defending over 50 shots on goal.
The season was immediately over for the Como Park Cougars and it wasn’t so bad. They had some ups and downs with some games, but finished with 11 wins that won’t be taken for granted. Como Park has over 60 goals on the season from their first line and center Adam Crowley racked up 28 alone. Tyler Rose stepped up as a top player in the Tri Metro conference earning recognition by Pioneer Press as an Athlete of the Week February 15th. The Men’s varsity hockey team had some things to like for the season especially for the amount for the seniors leaving and hopefully they can do even better next year.
