The Como Park Girls Gymnastics season is on the verge of winding down, but that does NOT mean it’s the end of the excitement for the gymnasts. In fact, it means that some of the best performances of the year are yet to come. The girls are reaching the peak of their abilities for what this year of training will allow, and with all of the strength, stamina, and courage they can muster, they strive for perfection and the attainment of new, more advanced skills.
However, one’s chances of witnessing the awe-inspiring, gravity defying acts are running out. There are only three more opportunities to see the team in action, two conference meets against Central on Wednesday, January 20th at home, and Highland on Wednesday, January 27th at Highland. After those two meets, the final varsity conference meet will be held on Thursday, February 11th at Johnson Senior High.
In an unfortunate turn of events, varsity gymnast Amanda Alden will be out for what may be the remainder of the season. During warm-ups at their meet against the Johnson Governors she attempted her aerial to see if she could execute it consistently for her floor routine, but regrettably misjudged her landing, breaking her ankle. Because of this she incurred a broken ankle.
But it’s not all bad news on the progress front. In the course of one day, co-captains Mitzi Peine and Chelsea Preiner were able to learn a standing backflip (or standing back tuck in gymnastics vernacular), a trick that should have a profound impact on their floor scores. The girls’ skills on bars have been taken up a notch after coach Megan Seckler encouraged the girls to learn an advanced technique known as a fly-back. This move is executed from the high bar to the low bar with a blind landing. If you would like to witness the magnificent spectacle of these techniques, as always, come on out and support the girls for their last couple of meets!
