Gymnastics Mid-Season Update
January 7, 2010

The coming of January not only brings in the new year, but marks the midway period in all winter sports seasons. It is at this point that all of the hard work and dedication begins to show through the performance of athletes. This has been a building year for the Como Park Gymnastics team, a young team comprised mostly of sophomores and juniors.
There has been only one home meet within the past three weeks (which was against Central). The results of the Highland/Como meet have yet to be released but will soon be available online. (For more information go to www.stpaulathletics.org.)
The halfway point of a season is a time for all athletes to look back on the beginning of the season and recognize their improvement. The bonds that hold this team together have grown and friendships have been strengthened by their shared experiences. Two months of continuous conditioning and repetition of technique has made the progress of the individuals nothing less than consistent.
Captain Mitzi Peine has conquered her roundoff/back handspring/back tuck tumble pass making her a threat on floor, while co-captain Chelsea Preiner’s success with her roundoff/back handspring/back handspring tumble pass leaves the judges in awe. Amanda Alden has been enthusiastically tackling the no-handed cartwheel (also known as an aerial) and is just leaps away from consistently executing the technique with ease.
The above-mentioned accomplishments only compose a fraction of the progress made daily by all team members. If the team keeps persevering and progressing like they have been, their home meet against Johnson on Wednesday, January 13th should should keep onlookers on the edge of their seat. Come out to cheer the team as they take on Johnson in “The Governor Grind.”
