The boys’ basketball season is right around the corner. After playing in a Columbia Heights tournament the team got a preview of what is to come. Como Park played against teams such as North Saint Paul, St. Louis Park, Columbia Heights, and others in 20 minute running time scrimmages.
Joe Conley said “I think we did good. It was more of an evaluating period rather then a real game time situation”
The conference and section defending champions, Johnson Senior High look to be the biggest competition for Como with returning players like Estan Tyler and Max Rosenbloom. Our boys will have to improve on last years defense and make smarter decisions on offense to be successful.
Como Park has two returning starters Joe Conley and Adrian Wackett. But unlike previous years everyone is a key player. Adrian said “Players need to put team success over individual success.” Where the team lacks size, they make up for it in quickness. Last year Como gave up, on average, 70 points per game. This year they are trying to cut that number down to about 55 to 60 points per game. Being so early in the season, it is hard to tell where Como Park stands in the conference but as Joe Conley says they will take it “one game at a time.”
Update:
The boys opened up their season on Dec. 11 in a home game vs. Mahtomedi. The Zephyrs had a quick lead in the first couple minutes before the Cougars set up several backcourt traps that led to back to back steals. With under a minute left before halftime and the Cougars down by two, Conley had the ball. He attacked the middle, made a weird crossover and pulled up to tie the game at 47-47.
For the second half both teams ran the court. The Zephyrs pulled away to take home a 90-78 win over the Como Park cougars. Bobby Sherwood led all scores with 25pts, while Brandon Baker led the Cougar’s with 21pts. The boys take on the the St. Bernard’s Bulldogs (1-1) Saturday at 12:30 @ St. Bernard’s.
