November 16th marked the beginning of the season for Como Park’s Girls Basketball team. During those first days of practice tryouts divided the athletes by skill level. Each person trying out was assigned to one of three teams (Varsity, Junior Varsity, and C Team) each of which have their own coach.
Recently, the Como Crier was able to sit down with the head coach of the C Team to ask him a couple of questions regarding the teams performance and how he thinks the season is going to go.
Crier: How many years have you been coaching girls basketball and how do you feel the team will do this year in comparison to other years?
Jonah Fields: I’ve been coaching pretty much just as long as I’ve been teaching here. In terms of the team this year they’re a great group of girls with a lot of potential and a lot of heart. It was a little difficult this year getting the girls used to how practice works, but that got smoothed out pretty fast. Each year has its own difficulties. I’m surprised to see so much young talent in this year’s team.
Crier: Are there any particular individuals that have surpasses your expectations?
J. Fields: Basketball is a team sport and all individuals are team players. It wouldn’t be fair of me to play favorites, however as a team they have all been working hard to improve their game.
Crier: What is your strategy for winning games this year going to be? What, if anything, are you going to do differently from last year?
J. Fields: Always finding an open man to pass to is key. If there is someone open we can work the ball around the court and find an opening. We are a team so we have to play as one.
Crier: Is there some sort of mantra or motto for this year that’s helping to guide this team?
J. Fields: Like I said before basketball is a team sport so we need to play like a team. For a motto I would like to say we work hard, play hard, and win games, but most importantly we have fun.
Hopefully the girls will continue to work hard and have a good season. Come cheer them on to victory at their upcoming games!
