Como Park Men’s soccer team finished the regular season at an unbelievable 17-1 but had to relive the nightmare of last year’s playoff loss. Despite their feat in the Semi- Final round, Como had a great season full of teamwork, dedication, and fun.
The year prior, Como Soccer had a fabulous season finishing 16-2 and making it to the sectional championship. Unfortunately they could not take the win when they lost in an overtime shootout against Mounds Park Academy. This year they had yet another loss in a shootout during the playoffs that they hoped to win.
Expectations seem to have been met in the regular season of Como Cougars Men’s Soccer but maybe not as much as they expected in the post season. With the majority of players returning to play in the 2009 soccer season they expected to come out big, and exceed prior attempts to win it all, but the expectations were halted early in the attempt.
A bye in the first round brought the Como Park Varsity Soccer team to a quarterfinals match against New Life Academy which they took a 6 score shutout win. A following match up brought them to their home field again where they took on South Saint Paul who the beat 2-0 in the regular season. The semi finals were just another step in the way of their championship game. The game they hoped to take home but the step against South Saint Paul ended up bigger than they originally thought.
Out shooting their opponents didn’t seem to be enough while they only found one goal in South Saint Paul’s net. A tie score at the end of regulation time brought the game to shootout in overtime. In the end the Como Park Cougars suffered the loss they did not think they would have to endure yet again this season.
The Como Park Men’s Varsity Soccer team had to end the season early as the number one seed in the playoffs and was definitely expecting more. Regardless of the hard loss, the team had a great season with a lot of dedication and hard work put in. A loss in the playoffs may try to define them in the next season, but overall they did a great job. Good luck next year Cougars.
