Ultimate Frisbee Is Back and Better Than Ever!

Many people misunderstand what Ultimate really is. Many believe it’s the same thing as Frisbee Golf or when you throw a Frisbee through a hula-hoop. It is nothing like either of those. Ultimate is a fast paced, highly competitive sport (unlike it’s played in gym due to the level of skill of the players.)

Each team has seven players on the field at a time. The game begins with the pull, similar to a kickoff in football. From there the opposing team picks up the disc and begins play.

Players then make a series of cuts to get open for the disc. When a player has possession of disc they CANNOT take any steps. Taking steps will result in a travel. If the travel occurs while a player is throwing, then the disc returns to the thrower and it’s replayed.

Ultimate is a self officiated sport. So, there will not be an official there to make the calls for you, the players themselves make all the calls. If the players cannot come to an agreement on the call, the play is just redone.

The typical offense consists of 3 players being handlers and the other 4 players being cutters. A handler is similar to the quarterback in football, for it is the primary thrower. So, the handlers are usually the better throwers on the team. A cutter is similar in a way to say, a wide receiver in football, as for they make specific cuts to get open for the disc.

The Como Park Ultimate team is in search of new players. It is co-ed, so both guys and girls are welcome. If you’re an athlete and are interested in playing, contact Mr. Savage in room 1414 or see players Dan Heuer, Jesus Caballero, or Luther Buhr.

Como players play year round in different leagues. The main Minnesota High school league is in the spring. Many of you might be thinking, “Oh man I already play a spring sport, I can’t do both.” If that’s you, here’s the thing, you’re wrong. Ultimate is run through its own organization the UPA (Ultimate Players Association), so it is organized as a club here at Como. Practice and games are after other sports practices so that players are eligible to do both; play a school sport and play Ultimate.

Como Park Ultimate already went 4-1, upsetting 2nd ranked team in state Minneapolis South in a tournament on September 26th, finishing in 3rd place. They’re off to a strong start and it’s not too late to come out and play.

Ultimate is a relatively simple sport to learn. All you really need to begin is enthusiasm, because the sport involves a lot of running and pushing your body to its limits. And if you’re good at running and/or jumping Ultimate is the sport for you! What if you can’t throw? With practice, learning to throw a disc is easy! As long as you’re willing to learn, you will have it down in no time!
