“Good luck going to sleep” is what many people will tell you before going to see the newly released film, Paranormal Activity. Starting off as just an independent film shown in select cites is now a nation wide critically acclaimed release that has the people talkin’ or maybe not talking at all…
One thing you’ll notice at the beginning of the movie is the documentary style filming. The movie is actually steadily filmed with a handheld camera by one of the main characters Micah. You really should only feel a slight nauseous feeling at the very most unlike the movie “Cloverfield” where people were throwing up even at the beginning of the movie.
The point of filming by Micah was to uncover the paranormal things that were happening to his girlfriend Katie. The movie takes place in the couple’s household where the most unexpected things come into play and take you by surprise. If it could be summed up in one word, it would definitely be anticipation.
The inception of the movie is very slow and a lot of people just expected something to scare them in the first 5 minutes. Anticipation was obviously the key in the filming. Throughout the entire movie you find yourself watching a deadly quiet scene just waiting for something to scare you. It actually takes about 30 minutes in to experience the true horror of paranormal activity.
Some may say that it’s too boring and not even scary. A tip would be not to go see a movie you don’t believe in. You can only make something as good as you think it is. If you’re someone who doesn’t believe in ghosts, spirits, and demons then you probably won’t find the move as creepy as it should be. So save yourself the time, money and complaints.
Overall the movie regards anticipation as the key and brings back meaning to being on the edge of your seat. It is not riddled with horror and gore just to scare you; it takes a real life perception and gives you the feeling of almost being there. The documentary filming is much needed for the feeling of the movie regardless of what apathetic viewers might think.
Chills will run up your spine and thoughts will dwell inside of you if you enjoy this movie. It truly is mind bobbling and has a complete eerie feel to it. This movie defies your average scary film and is the reason it is a must see. It’s not so much a movie as it is an experience and an experience that might just not let you sleep that night…or even nights to come.
