The Como Park Drama Department will be entertaining us with a Musical Comedy this year. “It’s funny,” Janelle Flinner said, as she pulled out a script and explained the general premise. “Pay to pee,” she said, “You have to pay to pee.”

The last straight drama that the Como Park Theater department put on was “Les Misérables,” in 2006. Ever since then, mainly, the productions have been comedies. This year, the musical is chalk full of laugh lines and situational irony, but also includes plenty of death.

Janelle thinks that it’s easier to do a comedy than a drama because it’s easier to remember and perform the laugh lines than two-page long, serious conversation filled with important information that drives the plot.

With the choirs visiting New York in the spring, the musical has been scheduled for the fall, November 19th and 20th to be exact. The choirs will be practicing during class, mostly, with some time for dress rehearsals in mid-November. In previous years this set up has made it easier for the whole cast. Rehearsal during the day makes it possible to keep students in the musical and sports during the same season, which helps keep the numbers of performers on the cast up. It’s also much easier for Ms. Whitney in that she actually gets to spend time at home doing things that don’t involve the Como Park music department during musical season.

Organizing the musical this way has also raised problems for some students who want to be part of the cast, but aren’t in, or just don’t have time for choir this year. So what can interested students do? Janelle explained that students can talk to Ms. Whitney about being on technical crew, and besides that, set construction is held on Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for anyone who wants to help the theater department this fall.
