Inglourious Basterds – A Movie Review

The most recent, and much anticipated movie of critically acclaimed director Quentin Tarantino, Inglourious Basterds, had its release this summer on August 21st. Tarantino’s own take on a WWII movie was carried by the great work of an all star cast. Brad Pitt as the Basterds’ southern leader Lieutenant Aldo Raine, aka Aldo the Apache, and an incredible performance by German actor Christoph Waltz as Colonel Hans Landa, aka the Jew Hunter led a long list of excellent actors and actresses to pull off a level of believability despite the outlandish and overall unbelievable concept of the film.
Inglourious Basterds starts off “once upon a time, in Nazi occupied France”, which accurately describes the movie as a whole. The characters and their actions in the film are in no way real. The movie’s incredible inaccuracies have offended plenty of WWII veterans. Still, Basterds wasn’t made to have textbook accuracy. It was made to be a good Tarantino film, and the director, who brought us such movies as Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, and True Romance, does not disappoint.

The movie provides an entertaining 2 ½ hours with witty dialog, highly amusing characters, and a series of plotlines which, though somewhat cumbersome, come together satisfyingly at the end.
As a warning, this film is subtitled almost 75% of the time, and since most of the film’s substance stems from the dialog, it wouldn’t be a good movie for those who dislike subtitles. It is also packed with bloody/gory scenes, so is not for the faint hearted. If you can make it past the problem of illiteracy and blood, however, I would highly suggest seeing this movie, which I would give four out of five stars.
